Jaxson Dart’s father didn’t mince many words with CBS Sports’ Danny Kennel, who doesn’t seem to think the Giants should get too comfortable with the rookie as their franchise quarterback.
“I don’t know if Jaxson Dart is the long-term answer for the Giants,” Kanell, a former NFL quarterback and current TV analyst, said on the network. “When I think of a first-round draft pick, I think it’s somebody that you should picture for 10 to 12 years as gonna be your guy.”
Dart’s father didn’t take too kindly to the former NFL quarterback’s comments, posting his displeasure on social media.
“Bro, Eat a Fat One!” Dart’s father replied after the Giants defeated the Raiders, 34-10, in Las Vegas.
“I still haven’t seen development as a passer,” Kanell added. “He still is running the football, and they’re designing runs for him. But I wanna see him take that next step as a passer, and I just haven’t seen it yet.”
Dart played a strong game against an embarrassingly bad Raiders team Sunday despite Kanell’s comments.
Dart went 22-for-30 with 207 yards with no passing touchdowns and no interceptions, while adding nine carries for 48 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Kanell played in the NFL for six seasons and was even the Giants starting quarterback for the entire 1997 season.

Kanell threw 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions for 1,740 yards in 16 games for a Big Blue team that won the NFC East division with a 10-5-1 record.
Of course, Kanell had the benefit of some budding playmakers on that team that were fully healthy, including Tiki Barber and Amani Toomer, among others.

The same benefit can not be said for Dart, who has had to contend with loads of injuries to his playmakers — which has perhaps hurt his growth a bit as a passer.
Dart lost top receiver Malik Nabers and electrifying rookie running back Cam Skattebo.
The Giants’ win handed control of the No. 1 selection in 2026 to the Raiders, though Big Blue will still end up with a high pick.
