Grocery shopping finally pays off.
An Illinois woman won $1 million from a lottery ticket that she bought at the supermarket — and which she had forgotten about entirely.
The unidentified woman was shopping at a grocery store in Elmhurst, Illinois, on Oct. 20, when she decided on a whim to pick up a lotto ticket, according to the Illinois Lottery.
“While on my way to visit my aunt, I made a quick stop at Jewel to pick up a few groceries, and before heading out the door, I grabbed a quick pick Lucky Day Lotto ticket,” the lucky lady told lottery authorities.
She then put the ticket in her pocketbook and went on with her life — forgetting that she had any ticket at all.
The woman matched all five numbers of that Sunday evening’s drawing — with the numbers 2-3-24-25-28, according to lotto officials. But she wouldn’t figure out she just hit the motherlode until a few days later.
“A couple days after the drawing, I saw the ticket in my purse and opened my lottery app to scan my ticket and check if it was a winner,” the Illinois woman told the Illinois Lottery.
“I immediately saw “$1,000,000” on the screen and I was in total shock. I scanned the ticket one more time to double-check, and when it showed “$1,000,000” again, I instantly started crying. I thought, ‘This is unbelievable.’”
The woman said she is most excited to be able to afford her annual trip she takes to Ireland.
This is the ninth Illinois Lottery player this year to win $1 million or more with Lucky Day Lotto, according to the Illinois Lottery.
