The debate over parental rights has returned to the center of the national agenda after a Catholic legal group asked the Supreme Court to block a controversial California law that exempts public schools from having to notify parents about the gender identity of transgender students. The organization argues that parents only delegate to schools the authority necessary to educate their children, not to make fundamental decisions about their identity.
A federal judge supported this position by issuing an injunction stating that parents have a constitutional right to receive information about their children’s gender identity and that teachers have the right to provide parents with accurate information. Meanwhile, the California attorney general’s office said it will continue to defend the state law in court.
