Over time — and I have voted for the Hall of Fame for more than a quarter of a century — you learn the only perfect ballot is yours.

Each of yours.

There are a lot of folks who see anyone associated with steroid usage as unelectable and a lot of folks who insist on not playing drug police, just put in the best from an era. Your borderline of where the cutoff is between election to Cooperstown or not is kind of a fingerprint, distinct from what others think.

You are a large Hall person or a small Hall person, and whichever side of that divide you are on comes with a certainty that renders the opposing viewpoint, at minimum, as wrong … and reactions far worse than that if you are a social media screamer. Tolerance of other viewpoints is not common on these issues.
