Steelers interview Mike McCarthy as search for Mike Tomlin replacement heats up

The Steelers are giving Mike McCarthy a long look for their head coach vacancy.

The former Packers and Cowboys head coach took part in an in-person interview for the Pittsburgh job on Wednesday, the team announced.

McCarthy, who spent last season away from NFL sidelines after parting ways with Dallas after the 2024 season, also interviewed for the Titans’ head coach position before they hired Robert Saleh.

The Giants had previously been linked to McCarthy before they opted to go with John Harbaugh.

The Steelers have cast a wide net since longtime head coach Mike Tomlin stepped down, interviewing the likes of Viking defensive coordinator Brian Flores, Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, and Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula, among many others.

McCarthy, a Super Bowl winner with the Packers in 2010, has been a consistent winner during his 18 years as a head coach registering a 174-112-2 regular-season record with 12 playoff berths.

With the Cowboys from 2020-24, McCarthy’s teams featured three 12-win seasons, but the franchise moved on following a 7-10 season in 2024.

Whoever gets the job in Pittsburgh will be tasked with filling the massive shoes of Tomlin, who spent 19 seasons at the helm without a losing season and won the 2008 Super Bowl.

The hiring will be just the fourth Steelers head coach since 1969 after long tenures from Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher and Tomlin.

In all likelihood, the Steelers will also be looking at a new starting quarterback as well.

Indications point to the potential departure – or retirement – of Aaron Rodgers after the Tomlin exit. But ESPN left the door open with a report Sunday that the Steelers still “remain open” to bringing Rodgers back for 2026

Despite all their regular season success, the Steelers have yet to get over the hump in the postseason in recent years, losing six straight playoff games under Tomlin, including the Wild Card Round loss to the Texans earlier this month.
