American TikTok star Alex Consani has become the first transgender woman to grab the Model of the Year title at the British Fashion Awards.
The 21-year-old was named the top model at the annual fashion event in London on Monday night.
“I’m the first trans woman to win this award,” the model told the crowd as she claimed her prize.
The California native now joins the ranks of some of the modeling world’s biggest names to have won the award — including Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Bella Hadid and Cara Delevingne.
“Now, more than ever, it’s an important conversation that should be had about how to truly support and uplift one another within this industry, especially those who have been made to feel insignificant,” Consani told the audience as she thanked her parents and other trans models.
“Because change is more than possible — it’s needed.”
Consani rose to social media stardom with her TikTok videos during COVID and has since amassed a nearly 4 million-strong following on the platform.
The model, who also boasts some 1.5 million followers on Instagram, has been signed to IMG Models since 2019.
She became one of the first trans models to walk in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in October alongside Brazilian model Valentina Sampaio.
Consani has also graced the catwalk for a handful of luxury brands including Chanel, Alexander McQueen and Burberry.
She was even featured in the music video for Charli XCX’s “360” song from her “Brat” album.
