Snow rest for New York City students!

Elementary school kids don’t have a friend in Mayor Mamdani, who closed schools on Monday but declared that class will still be in session – remotely – due to Winter Storm Fern.

Hizzoner and Schools Chancellor Kamar H. Samuels announced early Sunday that the city’s public school students are still expected to show up for class from home, on their laptops and tablets.

The move will have roughly 500,000 public school students across the city’s nearly 1,100 schools clocking into class from home. Students in high school and grades 6-8 will still have the day off — due to a previously scheduled professional learning day.

The Mayor said that the move comes as a result of wanting to keep city kids safe.

“As snowfall begins to blanket our city and conditions become hazardous, closing school buildings is a necessary step to keep New Yorkers safe,” Mayor Mamdani said.

This comes just days after the mayor promised that New York City students wouldn’t have a “traditional snow day” when the devastating storm came barring down on the Big Apple.

“It’s not going to be a traditional snow day,” the Mayor said at a press conference on Friday. “That is a determination we’ve made.”

While the City mayor has the ability to call a formal snow day, they’re also tried to ensure that New York City students are in class for the state-mandated minimum of 180 days.
