Over 1,000 people have unsurprisingly received a get-out-of-jail-free card thanks to Joe Biden just a month before he leaves office.
The Associated Press reported on Thursday that Biden has decided to commute the sentences of about 1500 convicts who were released from prison during the COVID-19 pandemic and placed on home confinement. In addition, Biden also announced he was pardoning 39 people convicted of “non-violent” crimes.
This marks the largest single-day act of clemency in modern American history. Barack Obama previously held the record at 330 right before leaving office in 2017.
Biden argued in a statement that he is honoring America’s tradition as a country that gives out second chances, and these individuals had expressed remorse for their actions.
“America was built on the promise of possibility and second chances,” Biden said in a statement. “As president, I have the great privilege of extending mercy to people who have demonstrated remorse and rehabilitation, restoring opportunity for Americans to participate in daily life and contribute to their communities, and taking steps to remove sentencing disparities for non-violent offenders, especially those convicted of drug offenses.”
Biden also argued that the people he was pardoning had been successfully rehabilitated and claimed the 1,500 people whose sentences he was commuting would have received much lower sentences in today’s America.
“That is why, today, I am pardoning 39 people who have shown successful rehabilitation and have shown commitment to making their communities stronger and safer, he added. “I am also commuting the sentences of nearly 1,500 people who are serving long prison sentences – many of whom would receive lower sentences if charged under today’s laws, policies, and practices.”
“These commutation recipients, who were placed on home confinement during the COVID pandemic, have successfully reintegrated into their families and communities and have shown that they deserve a second chance.”
Biden also vowed to “take more steps” in the near future.
Reuters reported that the pardons were for people convicted of ‘non-violent’ drug offenses and people identified by so-called civil rights groups as wrongfully jailed.
Biden’s mass clemency comes just 11 days after he corruptly pardoned his ne’er do well son Hunter. As TGP’s Kristinn Taylor reported, Biden granted Hunter a full pardon in the federal gun and tax cases against him.
The pardon covers any federal crimes by Hunter from 2014 to 2024 and ends a case that was unleashed by IRS whistleblowers who spoke out after the Biden DOJ deliberately slow-walked an investigation into Hunter. This not only allowed the statute of limitations to pass on some charges, but the DOJ then offered Hunter a sweetheart plea deal that was thankfully rejected by a federal judge in Delaware resulting in the appointment of a special counsel by disgraced Attorney General Merrick Garland in the case.
Moreover, the pardon absolves Hunter of any possible drug involvement, sex trafficking, lobbying, bribery, foreign agent or other crimes involving Ukraine and several other foreign governments or companies, including China. The start date of 2014 conveniently coincides with the year Hunter joined the board of the Ukraine energy firm Burisma in an influence peddling scheme alleged to have involved Joe Biden aka “The Big Guy.”
