SAN FRANCISCO — Tony Dungy once was in a similar situation that Sean Payton found himself in during the AFC Championship Game. 

It was in 2006 and Dungy’s Colts were facing the Ravens in the playoffs.

Those Ravens had the No. 1 defense in the NFL and a middling offense.

So, when he faced a fourth-and-3 at the Baltimore 5-yard line, he decided to rely on Adam Vinatieri’s foot instead of Peyton Manning’s arm.
