Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid turned a routine post-race interview after winning the bronze medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics into a confession that he cheated on his girlfriend and desperately wants her back.
Lægreid, 28, who won third place in the men’s individual biathlon event in Milan, Italy, broke down in tears while he spoke to Norwegian news outlet NRK.
The Olympian said, “There’s someone I wanted to share it with who might not be watching today. Six months ago, I met the love of my life. The most beautiful and kindest person in the world.”
“Three months ago, I made my biggest mistake and cheated on her, and I told her about it a week ago,” he continued. “It’s been the worst week of my life.”
Lægreid then began to cry during the live television broadcast.

In a follow-up statement to the Norwegian newspaper VG, Lægreid elaborated on his decision to go public with his infidelity.
Lægreid explained that after he had originally confessed to the woman, the relationship ended, but he is willing to commit “social suicide” to make up for it.
“I told her a week ago, and then it ended, of course. I’m not ready to give up. I hope that committing social suicide might show how much I love her,” he told the newspaper.
Lægreid asserted, “I’m taking the consequences for what I’ve done. I regret it with all my heart.”
The ex-girlfriend, whose identity has not been revealed, has not publicly responded to the gesture.
