Zoo visitors are already being charmed by a four-week-old baby giraffe — thanks to his distinctive tuft of hair.
Toledo Zoo & Aquarium in Ohio welcomed Eugene, who weighed about 130lbs at birth, on January 17.
He has settled in well with the herd of seven other giraffes.
Fans have fallen for the calf’s playful personality and signature tuft of hair, staff say.
Visitors can currently spot Eugene through indoor viewing windows, with his outdoor debut expected this spring as temperatures rise.
Eugene was born to parents Lily and Rocket — Lily’s first calf, though father Rocket has welcomed offspring before.
Jennifer Brassil from the zoo said, “He’s growing into his own personality.
“Once he was introduced to the rest of the giraffe herd, everybody has been getting along well and is really interested in him, and he’s interested in them.
“The public is just loving him.”
Eugene’s most distinctive feature — a tuft of hair on top of his head — has made him an instant social media favorite.
“He’s got his little tuft of hair on top of his head,” Brassil said.
“Typically, our giraffes don’t go out into our Africa exhibit until the weather reaches somewhere around 50 degrees.
“So he probably won’t be making his debut in his outdoor exhibit until this spring when it warms up a bit.”
The name Eugene came from suggestions and has proven to be a perfect fit for the young giraffe’s emerging personality.
“It really does seem to fit his personality. He’s grown into that name,” Brassil said.
