Ex-Prince Andrew first royal to be arrested in nearly 400 years

The former Prince Andrew became the first senior royal in modern history to be arrested.

King Charles I was the last royal to be arrested but this dates all the way back to the English Civil War in 1647. Charles I was tried and executed in January 1649.

In November 2002, Princess Anne, King Charles’ sister, became the first royal to be convicted of a criminal offense. She was convicted under the UK’s Dangerous Dogs Act.

Her bull terrier pooch bit two children in Windsor’s Great Park in April of that year. She was fined £500 for the attack, ordered to pay £250 in compensation.
