TAMPA — If he could live in the world of “Severance,” he would have an innie and an outie: Austin Wells the catcher and Austin Wells the hitter.

Of course, the Yankees cannot perform surgery on Wells to ensure that he is able to completely separate his hitting and catching duties in what is arguably the most demanding job in the game.

But entering his third full season in the big leagues, the 26-year-old is trying to find a way to better balance his offense and defense, at least more consistently than he did last year.

Too often, Wells acknowledges, he will step into the batter’s box with his mind tied up, already thinking about his game plan for his pitcher in the next half-inning.
