WASHINGTON, D.C. — Despite early indications to the contrary, the Senate passed the SAVE Act after Senator Mike Lee reportedly changed its name to the “Give Congress A Raise Act.”
Senator Mike Lee reintroduced the SAVE Act in the Senate this week under a new name in hopes that a simple rebrand would garner the bill more support among his colleagues.
“Now introducing H.R. 7296, the — ahem — Give Congress A Raise Act,” Lee said as he addressed the Senate Chamber. “I move for a vote immediately without anyone reading the bill.”
“A raise? Hot dog!” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer reportedly said, seconding the motion to proceed directly to a vote. “I call on all Democrats to vote for this bill.”
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, blamed by many for holding up passage of the SAVE Act, was quick to support the new bill. “I will absolutely invoke a talking filibuster for this,” he said. “Let’s gooooooo!”
According to Lee’s office, the content of the bill is identical to the version that passed the House of Representatives on February 11, only with a new name that’s easier for Senators to stomach. Support for the bill was so overwhelming that it quickly passed in a rare unanimous vote.
At publishing time, only Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders appeared suspicious of the new bill, but wasn’t willing to open up debate and risk missing out on a raise.
