Troops, beware: controversial billboard tells you to disobey orders

A striking new billboard near Naval Base San Diego is turning heads and stirring debate.

The massive sign, installed by the local chapter of Veterans for Peace, tells active-duty military and National Guard members to “refuse illegal orders.”

The messaging mirrors a controversial video released last year by several Democratic lawmakers with military backgrounds, including Sen. Mark Kelly and Reps. Jason Crow and Chrissy Houlahan, urging troops to reject unlawful commands. Similar billboards have popped up nationwide as part of a broader campaign.

Positioned in Barrio Logan, a historically working-class, predominantly Latino neighborhood known for its vibrant Chicano murals and activist culture, the sign is impossible to miss. Residents and military personnel alike are taking notice.

Critics argue the billboard is politically charged and could undermine military discipline. Supporters, however, see it as a necessary reminder of troops’ legal obligation under US military law to disobey clearly unlawful orders, though experts note that determining what counts as “illegal” is rarely simple, and refusing orders carries serious consequences.

For some, it is a bold statement of principle, for others, a lightning rod in a politically and culturally sensitive area. Either way, it’s keeping San Diego talking.
