Chemical Smell Suddenly Grounds Flights At Several Major Airports

Planes have been grounded at all three Washington, D.C.-area airports following reports of a strong chemical smell emanating from the region’s air traffic control center.

Flights were abruptly grounded at Reagan National, Dulles, and Baltimore-Washington International Airports late Friday, causing major delays at one of the nation’s largest air travel hubs.

The Federal Aviation Administration noted that the reports were “preliminary” and that the groundings were “temporary.” It is unclear what caused the smell, or how how long the airports will remain locked down.

This latest development comes as the Department of Homeland Security remains partially shutdown, potentially impacting TSA screenings.
