Cops in the East Bay are on high alert as social media buzzes about a pair of so-called “beach takeover” parties set to hit the sand Sunday and Tuesday.
Police in Alameda say the events — which are not permitted — are drawing crowds of young people and could quickly spiral out of control.
One of the gatherings is even promoting an assassin-style game involving toy guns and water balloons.
Sounds harmless enough, authorities say — but similar games in the past have gone sideways fast.
“It sounds like good fun and everything,” East Bay Regional Park District Police Sgt. Chris Feliciano said.
“But when it starts spilling over to people and public who are not part of the game and it causes them to lose the enjoyment of the park, then that is going to be the problem.”
Officials say extra officers will be patrolling local beaches to keep things from getting out of hand.
“If you like to come and follow the rules, we welcome you,” Feliciano told NBC.
“Anything starts going sideways or you start disturbing the peace of other people in the area, then that’s when we will have to step in and make sure that we don’t have those minors that are drinking, we don’t have people smoking on the beach.”
Police are also urging parents to talk to their kids about steering clear of the unpermitted gatherings.
