Crazed DUI suspect scales roof of Sun Valley middle school in bizarre standoff with LAPD

Cops captured a crazed DUI suspect who climbed on to the roof of a middle school during a wild standoff early Monday morning.

The terrifying drama began around 3:30 a.m. when a police cruiser tried to pull over a driver after noticing his car was driving erratically in Sun Valley, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The driver refused the cops’ directions to stop and instead tried to evade them, leading police on a high-speed chase that ended when the suspect’s vehicle crashed into a fence near Byrd Middle School.

The man, who has not been identified, exited his car, bolted from the vehicle and entered the school’s grounds as police followed in hot pursuit.

The suspect, who is believed to be between the ages of 30 and 40, then climbed onto the school’s roof and refused to come down, cops said.

Officers contained the area as the crazed suspect stripped off his shirt and paced the school’s roof. Cops inflated a landing pad below the single-story building, in case the man jumped.

Officers spoke to the man and eventually convinced him to come down from his perch, according to police.

Reps for Los Angeles Unified said the campus was safe and would be open for instruction Monday.

“In an abundance of caution, the Los Angeles School Police Department will be providing extra patrols around our school,” a message to the Byrd Middle School community read.

The suspect was being held by police Monday morning. He faces charges including evading arrest.
