Downtown Los Angeles mass stabbing at Zaya restaurant sparked by fight over bill

A fight over who should pay for brunch sparked a terrifying slashing that rocked a posh downtown Los Angeles restaurant.

An all-female group of diners was settling the check at upscale Italian eatery Zaya around 5pm Sunday when an argument broke out over who would pay, according to Fox 11.

Patrons in the upscale “dinner and a show” haunt watched in horror as one woman suddenly brandished a knife and another lady clutched a bottle.

As the wild fight worsened and the women slashed at each other, witnesses called the police and the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Two women were arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, police said.

A victim who suffered cuts to her face refused medical treatment and left the restaurant on her own, an LAFD spokeswoman said.

Four other victims, all between the ages of 26 and 37, were transported to hospital for treatment. The restaurant said via its Instagram Stories that “some situations develop unexpectedly and are beyond our control.”

The statement on Instagram continued: “We are especially grateful for the swift response of our team, as well as the immediate support of local law enforcement and emergency personnel.”

A suspect fled the restaurant with a folding knife along 7th Street and Grand Avenue, according to reports from witnesses.

Video captured by bystanders showed dozens of firefighters and cops at the busy intersection that remained closed to traffic Sunday night.

Other footage showed a woman in a white dress being wheeled into the back of an LAFD ambulance. LAPD’s Central Division warned citizens of the incident on social media.

“Reports of multiple people injured at 7th St and Flower,” LAPD’s Central Division said. “Officers have responded and closed off the area. Expect traffic delays in the area.”

Zaya is a swanky lounge-style restaurant that markets itself as an upscale “dinner and a show” destination with nightly musical performers including jazz and soul.

The romantic spot is known for its dim lighting, cocktails and live music, with tight seating and a clubby crowd that make the place feel more like an intimate party than a traditional restaurant.

The restaurant was hosting an event called Sweet Serenade, with DJs and an emcee, when the terrifying slashing occurred.

In an interview, the event’s creator Jasmine Siders said her “long-term goal is for Sweet Serenade to be a household name associated with unforgettable memories and experiences.”

The restaurant did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
