The depth of the Mets’ farm system played a significant role in president of baseball operations David Stearns’ offseason rebuild of his roster.

Prospects such as Carson Benge, A.J. Ewing, Ryan Clifford and Jacob Reimer are promising enough that Stearns could lock in “now” talent such as Bo Bichette, Jorge Polanco and Luis Robert Jr. without blockading too much of the organization’s future.

Freddy Peralta is entering his walk year, but a wave of young pitching, highlighted by Jonah Tong and Christian Scott, is behind him. That doesn’t include Nolan McLean, still a rookie who has already resembled an ace.

The Mets are built to win this season. But the larger story might be that the team’s highly regarded farm system is producing the kind of talent that could yield sustained success.
