UFC’s Instagram hacked in apparent crypto scam

The UFC found itself the victim of a confusing social media hack.

A post to the company’s official Instagram account Wednesday night promoting a cryptocurrency did not come from the company, according to a report by MMA Junkie.

A UFC official told the website that their Instagram had been hacked and the post did not come from them.

An apparently fake post announcing the launch of a cryptocurrency was up on the UFC's Instagram account for more than an hour Wednesday night.

The photo in the post featured a UFC logo and an apparent crypto wallet address, and the caption featured promotional copy that seemed to suggest the MMA league was launching a new coin.

“UFC fans have been waiting, and the moment is here,” the post read. “Get ready to own the legacy. Precision. Strength. All in one coin. #UFC #UnleashTheFight.”

The post, which had comments turned off, was up on the UFC’s account for more than an hour before it seemed that the company retained control of the account and pulled it down.

During the apparent hack, there had also been a post on the account’s Instagram Story that linked to a site where the crypto was able to be purchased.

The UFC is holding a Fight Night event on Saturday in Saudi Arabia, headlined by Israel Adesanya vs. Nassourdine Imavov.

UFC 312, headlined by middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis defending against Sean Strickland, will take place a week later in Sydney, Australia.
