For the first time in history, the number of baptized Catholics worldwide has surpassed 1.422 billion, according to official data from the Anuario Pontificio 2026 and the Annuarium Statisticum Ecclesiae 2024, published by the Central Office of Church Statistics of the Secretariat of State and edited by the Vatican Publishing House.

In 2024, just over 1.422 billion faithful were recorded, compared to approximately 1.406 billion in 2023, representing a relative increase of 1.14%.

The percentage of Catholics in the world population remains stable at around 17.8%, in line with global demographic growth, as detailed in the Vatican report.

The strongest increases are concentrated in Africa (+2.6%) and Asia (+3.3%), where the Catholic faith continues to expand vigorously. In Africa, the number of Catholics rose from just over 281 million to nearly 288 million, consolidating its weight on the continent.

In Asia, notable dynamism is also observed, according to the same official data. This progress contrasts with the situation in Europe, where the percentage of Catholics declined slightly from 20.4% to 20.1%, despite a modest absolute growth.

The data reflect the challenges facing the Church in the West, where secularism and leftist ideologies have eroded traditional values in many nations.

In the area of clergy and apostolate, the report records a total of 465,048 clerics, with 407,421 priests (an increase of 425 compared to 2023) and 52,102 permanent deacons (+1.3%).

The number of people dedicated to pastoral activities rose to 4,464,622, with a 0.7% increase. These figures confirm the vitality of the Church in the Global South, where the faith is lived with authenticity and without the constraints of modern relativism.

As noted by the Central Office of Church Statistics, the growth in Africa and Asia is a clear sign of hope for the future of Christendom.
