The Luis Robert Jr. Rules: Guidelines Mets are using in hope of keeping dynamic outfielder healthy

LOS ANGELES — Luis Robert Jr. is among the few Mets performing at a high level, but the team is also exuding caution in trying to keep the talented outfielder healthy.

Along those lines, the Mets utilize load management. That was the case Sunday, when manager Carlos Mendoza not only had Robert on the bench, but later said he was unavailable to pinch hit for Tyrone Taylor in a one-run game in the eighth inning.

Mendoza outlined the team’s handling of Robert to SNY’s Steve Gelbs. Depending on workload, it’s decided before a game if Robert — on days he doesn’t start — will be available as a regular player off the bench or if he can only be deployed in a game-deciding situation.

If Robert is deemed a regular player off the bench, he partakes in his normal pregame routine and starts preparing around the fourth inning for possible action. But if it’s decided beforehand that Robert should receive a full day off, he avoids pregame activities. However, he can be used in a game-deciding situation.
