Martin was a true Southern Californian, attending Hamilton High School in Los Angeles before suiting up for the USC Trojans in college. He was then drafted by the Los Angeles Raiders in 1977 and spent the duration of his career with the organization.

Throughout his 12-year career in the NFL, Martin emerged as one of the top linebackers in the NFL. He was named a two-time All-Pro — being named to the first team in 1984 — and a two time Pro Bowl selection (1983-84).

The Raiders chose Martin in the 12th round with the 317th overall pick.

Initially a tweener due to his lack of size and athleticism, it was unknown if Martin would be a linebacker or safety at the next level. He bulked up from 210 pounds to 220-225 pounds and settled in at linebacker by starting eight games in his second season.

He helped lead the Raiders to Super Bowl victories in 1980 and 1983, with his performance in 1980 rewriting the record books.

Martin recorded three interceptions against the Eagles, setting the Super Bowl record for most interceptions in a single game and tying the Super Bowl record for most career interceptions.

Before before drafted by the Raiders, Martin was named first-team All-Pac-8 in 1976 for the Trojans. He also starred at Los Angeles City College prior to joining the Trojans.
