Shinnosuke Abe, the manager of Nippon Professional Baseball’s Yomiuri Giants, was arrested Monday after he allegedly assaulted his 18-year-old daughter during a dispute inside their Tokyo residence, according to Nikkei Asia.

Abe, 47, reportedly grew enraged while mediating an argument between his two teenage daughters, leading to the third-year skipper allegedly grabbing his eldest daughter and “forcing her to the floor.”

“I told them to be quiet but they talked back to me and I got furious,” Abe allegedly told police officers on the scene, according to the outlet.

Abe’s wife, his 18-year-old daughter and his 15-year-old daughter were all present during the dispute at their Shibuya Ward home.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police officers administered a breathalyzer test on Abe before taking him into custody, but he was released shortly thereafter, per Yahoo Japan.

Giants CEO and team president Toru Kunimatsu issued a statement on Abe’s arrest, calling it “unacceptable” and that the incident is under investigation.

“Violence is unacceptable, and we take this matter extremely seriously,” the statement read, according to Yahoo Japan. “We apologize to all professional baseball personnel and fans for this serious incident that occurred on the eve of the interleague series.

We will consider disciplinary action against Manager Shinnosuke Abe, including his future. From tomorrow onwards, Offensive Chief Coach Hideki Hashigami will serve as acting manager.”

The Giants are set to begin a three-game interleague matchup versus the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks on Tuesday.

Abe enjoyed a standout 19-year career as a player with the Giants before transitioning to the coaching side.

The ex-catcher notched 406 home runs, 1,285 RBIs and 2,132 hits during his nearly two-decade career, winning the Central League Most Valuable Player award in 2012.

The former team captain’s 406 homers rank third-most all-time in Giants history.

Abe succeeded Tatsunori Hara as manager after the 2023 season and led the Giants to their first Central League pennant in four years in 2024.
