That would be Victor Wembanyama. After seven quarters of mostly misery, the man they call “The Alien” had exhorted his teammates on the bench and led them on the floor. Now the ball was in his hands. He was open. Time was bleeding away at the end of the fourth quarter Friday night. The Knicks were up one. Frost Bank Center was a tinderbox.
Great player, great shot. To get here, Wembanyama had fueled his Spurs back from a 14-point deficit the easiest way possible: by out-Knicksing the Knicks, by going on a 14-0 run. It had been 97-83, then it was 97-97. A few minutes later it was Spurs 104, Knicks 102 when Wembanyama made a hoop and then converted an old-fashioned three-point play.
