At least one person was killed and 10 others injured as an active shooter opened fire in West Texas and barricaded himself inside a building Friday, officials said.
The nightmare tally in Midland was announced at a press conference shortly before city officials confirmed the gunman was dead, without elaborating on what sparked the carnage.
Police earlier said they were in a “standoff” with “an active shooter” after gunfire erupted around 8 a.m. Friday morning, with videos capturing the sound of several shots.
“Officers heard gunfire coming from the building and worked quickly to secure and clear the area,” Midland Police Chief Greg Snow said in a statement.

“Armored units were deployed, and partner agencies assisted in the response. Efforts to bring the standoff with the shooter to a safe resolution are ongoing.”
Mayor Lori Blong announced at a press conference before the incident was resolved that there were at least 11 victims, including one who had died.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and our officers,” she said in a news conference.
When she spoke, it was still being treated as an active shooter. But the city later announced that the “active shooter incident has been resolved, and the suspect is confirmed dead.”
No details about their identity nor what sparked it were given.
Midland is a city of about 130,000 located about 320 miles west of Austin.
