DEVELOPING: Massive Warehouse Fire Erupts in Los Angeles (VIDEO)

A massive warehouse fire erupted in Boyle Heights, California, on Wednesday.

Thick black smoke billowed from the storage facility in the 1400 block of S Los Palos Street.

It is unclear how the blaze started.

Firefighters are battling an explosive fire that broke out at a large cold storage facility in Boyle Heights on Wednesday afternoon, prompting a shelter-in-place in the area due to heavy smoke.

It’s possible that this fire could turn into a hazardous materials situation, according to Sky5’s Gil Leyvas, who is over the scene, so residents in the area are urged to take precautions.

The shelter-in-place was issued for areas east of Genasys LFD Zone 1279 — which is in the area between South Soto Street to Indiana Street and from the 10 Freeway to Washington Boulevard, according to officials.

The fire was first reported at 2:35 p.m. at the Lineage facility in the 1400 block of S Los Palos Street and quickly escalated.

First arriving units reported that fire was showing from the roof of the massive single-story building, which they estimated was about 1,000 feet x 500 feet.

Firefighters who were operating in offensive mode on the roof were told to immediately evacuate as the situation got more dangerous. They’re considering bringing in aerial help to battle the flames.

This is the second massive warehouse fire in Southern California this year.

Earlier this year, arson suspect Chamel Abdulkarim was federally charged in connection with the 6-alarm fire that destroyed a 1.2 million square-foot warehouse in Ontario, California.
