California Gov. Gavin Newsom and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were spotted deep in conversation as they took in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at SoFi Stadium.
The pair’s animated discussion before the USA’s matchup against Paraguay, with photos showing Trudeau gesturing emphatically and, at one point, raising his hands in a prayer-like pose as he spoke to the California governor who is believed to be preparing for a presidential run in 2028.

Trudeau was in Los Angeles to support his popstar girlfriend Katy Perry — who performed during the World Cup opening ceremony ahead of kickoff.
But it was his courtside-style chat with Newsom that drew almost as much attention as the action on the field.

The two appeared relaxed and friendly as they watched Team USA secure a victory in front of a packed crowd.
The appearance comes as Newsom continues to battle political hurdles.
The governor recently went on the offensive after reports emerged that he and wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom are the subject of a Department of Justice investigation.
In a letter to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Newsom blasted the probe as a politically motivated effort by the Trump administration.

The inquiry reportedly involves whistleblower allegations related to Siebel Newsom’s taxes, as well as a separate corruption probe connected to Newsom’s former chief of staff, Dana Williamson.
The Post previously revealed that the governor directed more than $4.4 million from special interests and wealthy individuals to the California Partners Project, one of Siebel Newsom’s signature initiatives.
Newsom has long been viewed as a potential Democratic contender for the White House in 2028, though he has not formally announced any plans.
Trudeau, meanwhile, has also been catching heat after opting to attend the World Cup opener in Los Angeles rather than Canada’s opening match in Toronto.
“Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call,” Trudeau wrote on X. “But you know who I’m rooting for to take the Cup.”
