BOSTON — It seemed like Jazz Chisholm Jr. was determined to exit Sunday night’s game against the Red Sox early.
The second baseman, inserted in the leadoff spot, was tossed after striking out to end the top of the sixth for arguing a checked-swing third strike.
Chisholm was upset with home plate umpire Adam Hamari, who made the call and didn’t check with third base ump Clint Vondrak.
As Chisholm turned to argue vehemently with Hamari at the plate, first base coach Dan Fiorito raced to home plate to try to calm Chisholm, with Aaron Boone soon following from the dugout.
None of it stopped Chisholm from continuing to argue and when he slammed his helmet as Boone talked with Hamari, Chisholm was finally tossed by first base umpire Todd Tichenor, the crew chief.
Chisholm was replaced in the lineup by Anthony Volpe, while José Caballero moved from short to second base.
It all happened as ex-Yankee Sonny Gray was dominating his former team, with the right-hander not allowing a hit through six innings.
The Yankees’ only baserunner heading into the seventh was Amed Rosario, who walked with two outs in the fifth and the Yankees down, 2-0.
Gray retired the first 14 batters he faced.
