Quentin Grimes celebrates Lakers signing with full-circle throwback photo

Quentin Grimes did not need long to show how much joining the Los Angeles Lakers means to him.

Shortly after the Lakers agreed to terms with the former Philadelphia 76ers guard on a four-year, $60 million contract, Grimes shared a throwback photo that made the signing feel much more personal.

In the picture, a young Grimes is sitting on the floor in full Lakers gear, wearing a purple-and-gold tank top and shorts while smiling next to his father, Marshall. His dad is behind him in a white “Lakers Basketball” shirt, turning the image into a full-circle moment.

Grimes, 26, arrives in LA after a winding NBA path that has taken him from the New York Knicks to the Detroit Pistons, Dallas Mavericks to the 76ers and now the Lakers. He also briefly played with Luka Dončić in Dallas during the 2024-25 season.

The Lakers are betting on Grimes as a two-way guard who can defend on the perimeter and space the floor. He averaged 13.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists last season with Philadelphia. Even after a down shooting year from 3-point range, Grimes has been a reliable catch-and-shoot option for most of his career.

His path was shaped early by his father.

The elder Grimes, a former college point guard, helped build his son’s game by putting him around older, stronger competition. Grimes started playing up at a young age, including local runs at 24 Hour Fitness against college and professional players.

In one story from his youth, Grimes’ father recalled him pulling up from 25 feet to win a game as an eighth grader. When Marshall asked why he took the shot, his son had a simple answer.

“Because I was hot.”

That early foundation helped carry Grimes through a career filled with adjustments. He was a five-star recruit, started at Kansas, transferred to Houston, helped lead the Cougars to the Final Four and became the No. 25 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.

Grimes also has a unique family tie beyond basketball. He is the half-brother of Dallas Stars defenseman Tyler Myers, making them the first siblings to play in the NBA and NHL.

Now, Grimes’ basketball journey has brought him to the team he once wore proudly as a child.

For the Lakers, the signing is about shooting, defense and depth around Dončić.

For Grimes, the photo says something more.
