Former Rams cornerback LeRoy Irvin, a two-time Pro Bowler, has passed away at 68 years old, according to his ex-teammate and Pro Football Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson.

Dickerson, who played with Irvin for five seasons in his historic Rams career, wrote on his Instagram page on Thursday that Irvin died recently, and he was “devastated to hear about” the news.

Eric Dickerson shared the news of LeRoy Irvin’s passing in a post on his Instagram page on Thursday. Instagram/@ericdickerson29

“Leroy wasn’t just a lockdown corner and a fierce competitor on the field; he was a true friend and a great man who always brought incredible energy,” Dickerson said. “Rest in peace, my brother. Sending my thoughts and prayers to the Irvin family and all of Rams Nation.”

In his post, Dickerson shared a photo of him and Irvin smiling while the two were at an event thrown by Dickerson’s foundation.

Irvin joined the Rams in 1980 after the team took him with the 70th overall pick in the draft. He went on to play a total of 10 seasons for Los Angeles, starting 104 games.

He finished his career with one season in Detroit.

Irvin compiled 35 interceptions during his time in the NFL and was named a Pro Bowler and an All-Pro on two separate occasions.

Further details surrounding his passing were not disclosed, although Los Angeles-based journalist Eric Geller — who worked with Irvin following the defensive back’s NFL retirement — wrote in a post on X that Irvin had been battling throat cancer.

“Extremely sad day – especially in the #RamsHouse,” Geller said. “My friend – LeRoy Irvin – lost his battle, ironically enough, to throat cancer last night which hits home for me in so many ways.

“I will miss that raspy voice and that sense of humor that made me smile and laugh whenever we met up at some Rams function. R.I.P. LeRoy!”
