Dramatic video captured the moment a gas tanker exploded into a massive fireball after slamming into a toll booth in India, killing five and injuring several others.
Shocking surveillance footage of the early morning June 26 crash showed the tanker approaching a toll booth in Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi when it struck a divider and came to an abrupt stop, with smoke immediately billowing out and engulfing the vehicle.
Eerie white smoke spread across the roughly 10-lane plaza for about two minutes before a raging inferno suddenly erupted and swallowed a nearby toll building, turning the calm sky into a fiery nightmare.
No vehicles were passing through the highway checkpoint when the tanker exploded, the clip showed.
The truck, traveling from Kanpur to Pratapgarh, was carrying liquefied petroleum gas that ultimately leaked after the crash and sparked the massive explosion, according to local media.
The towering blaze, visible from over a mile away, left the tanker’s driver, 40-year-old Dharmendra Dubey, and toll plaza worker Alok Singh dead at the scene, NDTV reported.
Several toll workers were rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries, including three who later died.
The deadly firestorm also destroyed 16 motorcycles and two parked cars, the outlet reported.
The investigation into the incident is reportedly ongoing.
