Derek Carr quickly lands media job after shock NFL retirement

Derek Carr couldn’t stay out of the game for too long.

After the former Saints quarterback stunningly retired this offseason, Carr will be involved in the NFL’s opening slate of games.

Carr, 34, will act as a studio analyst for YouTube’s inaugural broadcast for the Chiefs vs. Chargers Friday night game in Brazil.

Carr will be joined by Tyrann Mathieu, who also retired in what was a dramatic offseason in New Orleans.

Rich Eisen will handle play-by-play for the game, which kicks off on Sept. 5 and airs exclusively on YouTube, with Kurt Warner in the analyst role.

Carr and Mathieu will be analysts on the pregame show from the NFL Network studios in Los Angeles with Brandon Marshall and Peter Overzet.

On Tuesday, Mathieu posted several pictures on X, with multiple TV emojis as the caption.

Carr retired earlier this offseason in a surprising move that included some rumors of flirtation with other teams.

He also reportedly turned down $30 million in order to retire this offseason.

Carr reportedly was forced to retire due to a shoulder injury. In order to play, Carr would have needed to undergo shoulder surgery to repair a labral tear and damage to his rotator cuff, which would have ended his 2025 season anyway.

Carr played 11 seasons in the NFL and is the 16th highest-paid player in NFL history, making $195.6 million while playing nine seasons with the Raiders and two for the Saints.
