Reckless teen kills two elderly women in violent car crash

An allegedly reckless teenage driver blew through a stop sign and triggered a horrific crash that left two elderly women dead in Fresno County.

An 18-year-old Clovis woman driving a Toyota slammed into a Nissan driven by an 88-year-old man just after 1 p.m. Thursday the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office told The California Post.

The Nissan was carrying three passengers, including an 88-year-old woman, while the teenage driver had three passengers in her Toyota — eight people in all were caught up in the violent wreck.

The force of the collision sent both vehicles careening into a nearby embankment at the intersection of Auberry Road and Old Millerton Road near Millerton Lake.

Yvonne Cheney, 88, of Auberry, who was riding in the Nissan, was killed in the crash.

The driver of the Toyota had her grandmother and two younger siblings in the car.

A second victim, 94-year-old Nellie Moreno of San Joaquin, was a passenger in the Toyota. She was rushed to a hospital but later died from her injuries.

The children were treated at the scene and released.

Authorities allege the teen caused the deadly collision after failing to stop at the intersection. The crash remains under investigation.

The 88-year-old man from Prather and two other passengers in the Nissan were hospitalized with moderate to major injuries.

The 18-year-old also sustained major injuries and has been hospitalized. Her other two passengers were treated on-scene and released.

Footage of both cars showed the teen’s Toyota with a decimated front end, and the Nissan with heavy damage to its right front end and back, and with its left-side doors ripped off.

Police are still looking into the crash. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the investigation.

It’s unclear if the teenager has been charged with a crime.

The massive collision occurred about 25 miles northeast of Fresno and about 4 miles west of the unincorporated community of Millerton.
