St. John’s names Steve Masiello as general manager

St. John’s has filled its vacant general manager position with a familiar name.

It’s associate head coach Steve Masiello, according to sources.

Masiello has been working in that role for the past two months after interim general manager Tom Ostrom opted not to stay on full time.

Masiello will continue in his role as an assistant coach.

St. John’s is planning to hire another assistant after Greg Youncofski left for Xavier in the spring.

Former Louisville star and assistant coach Peyton Siva is one possibility, a source said.

The 48-year-old Masiello was the head coach at Manhattan from 2011-22 and led the Jaspers to a pair of NCAA Tournament berths.

When Pitino took the job at St. John’s, he brought Masiello with him as his top assistant.

Masiello has had a major hand in the program’s success as its top recruiter.

He worked with Ostrom to put together next year’s roster, which is led by top transfer Tounde Yessoufou of Baylor, European standouts Quinn Ellis and Babacar Sane, and returnees Ian Jackson and Ruben Prey.
