The San Francisco Giants have been busy selling players before this year’s trade deadline, and appear close to acquiring an intriguing young infielder as part of another potential deal.
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported that the Giants are “close to acquiring” Boston Red Sox infielder Marcelo Mayer in a trade for reliever Erik Miller. Not long afterward, the deal was made official.
Mayer has long been seen as one of baseball’s most compelling infield prospects. The Chula Vista, California native has struggled in Boston this season, hitting .220 with a .594 OPS in 205 at-bats. He was placed on the 10-day injured list because of a bone stress reaction to the left ulna in late June, and still hasn’t returned to the field.
The deal for the Giants comes amid what appears to be a fire sale by the bay.
San Francisco also shipped off Luis Arraez, who posted a heartwarming reaction for all Giants fans afterwards. They also dealt Heliot Ramos to the New York Yankees and starting pitcher Robbie Ray to the division-rival San Diego Padres.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox have been on the other end of trades.
Boston acquired former All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles, providing some pop into their lineup, and stability behind the plate.
The Red Sox are clearly in win-now mode. They have won 28 of their last 33 games, including a three-game sweep of the Dodgers in Los Angeles over the weekend.
