Fast-moving wildfire tears through Tejon Pass forcing evacuation warnings

A wildfire is raging near Tejon Pass in Kern County as officials issue evacuation warnings for the area.

The Buzzard Fire started around 8:29 a.m. Wednesday and quickly swelled from 30 acres to 180 acres in less than two hours, with 0% contained as of 9:59 a.m.

An evacuation warning is in effect for I-5 north of Lebec Road.

“An Evacuation WARNING is in effect in the I-5 north of Lebec Road,” the Kern County Sheriff’s Office said.

“You should PREPARE to leave. The situation can change very quickly, and visibility in area may be reduced and roads can become blocked. If you require additional time to evacuate, you should leave now.”

The Buzzard Fire began as a vegetation fire.

Lebec is a small unincorporated community in Kern County close to the border of Los Angeles County.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, and no injuries have been reported.

It comes as Los Angeles is getting a powerful new weapon to battle wildfires, but it comes with a staggering $43 million price tag — and taxpayers are footing the bill.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to buy a new Sikorsky S-70i Firehawk for the county fire department.
