Big Sur’s Timber Fire forces evacuation orders: ‘LEAVE NOW!’

The Timber Fire in Monterey County expanded to 800 acres Monday, doubling its size from Sunday evening while remaining just 5% contained.

The fire’s quick spread prompted the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office to issue immediate “LEAVE NOW!” evacuation orders late Sunday night for zones MRY-F026 and MRY-F027 — an area that encompasses the luxury Ventana Inn in Big Sur.

Burning southeast of Loma Vista within the rugged terrain of the Los Padres National Forest, the blaze was first reported Saturday night at around 9:38 p.m., according to KSBW.

Containment efforts — led by the U.S. Forest Service alongside CAL FIRE — have been severely hampered by difficult site access, heavy fuel loads, and increased evening fire activity including spotting.

Evacuation warnings are still in effect for the nearby zones MRY-F024, MRY-F025, and MRY-F028.

Many extra resources have been sent to battle the flames — both on the ground and in the air.

Authorities are urging residents in order zones to immediately take family, pets, and essential documents, while advising those in warning zones to pack go-bags and prepare for quick departures.

Officials are still investigating the exact cause of the Timber Fire.

Another wildfire broke out near the California Tactical Academy in Holser Canyon, near Lake Piru in Ventura County, shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8.

The Holser fire had burned nearly 167 acres triggering mass evacuation orders.

Another fast-moving wildfire erupted in Humboldt County, triggering evacuation warnings and a highway closure as flames reached the roadway along the Highway 96 corridor on Friday, Aug. 7.

The MP18 Fire burning north of Hoopa had grown 380 acres as of Saturday afternoon.

Evacuation warnings were issued in three zones over a “potential threat to life and/or property.”
