Mother and two daughters killed in car crash after concert to celebrate teen’s birthday

A mother and her two teen daughters out for a night of fun to celebrate an upcoming birthday died in a fiery wreck at the hands of a wrong-way driver.

The family’s car, a Honda Accord, was engulfed in flames after a northbound wrong-way driver slammed into them and another southbound vehicle early Sunday morning. The crash happened just before 12:45 a.m. on Highway 99 north of 7th Standard Road near Bakersfield, according to California State Highway Patrol.

Vanessa Schoettler and her daughters, Kloie and Kylie, died at the scene.

Loved ones say the three attended the concert to celebrate Kloie turning 17 soon.

“What should have been a weekend filled with memories and a celebration of Kloie turning 17 has instead left a family trying to comprehend the loss of a mother and her two daughters all at once,” a GoFundMe dedicated to the victims said.

Even more tragically, the trio leaves behind a brother and son — who will turn 16 the same day as Kloie’s birthday on Aug. 20.

“There are simply no words for the magnitude of this loss or for what this family is facing in the days, weeks, and months ahead,” the GoFundMe said.

A 44-year-old man driving a BMW 530I and his passenger were taken to the hospital with severe injuries.

Two passengers in the third vehicle involved, a Chevy Colorado, had minor injuries.

The crash is still under investigation, and anyone with information is urged to contact the California Highway Patrol.

The GoFundMe has raised about $31,000 of its $50,000 goal so far. The fundraiser aims to help “with funeral and memorial expenses, immediate family needs, and supporting Vanessa’s son as he navigates life after the unimaginable loss of his mom and sisters.”
