Add one more to a Yankees injured list that is crowded with position players.
Ryan McMahon, who has been out since exiting Wednesday’s game in Baltimore early, was placed on the IL with a Grade 2 left thumb sprain, the Yankees announced before beginning a series with the Blue Jays in The Bronx on Friday.
The Yankees had hoped the third baseman would avoid missing significant time after initial test results, following the injury sustained sliding into second base, were encouraging.
But follow-up examinations apparently showed enough to sideline McMahon, who joins an IL filled with Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger.
The Yankees called up another righty-hitting infielder to replace McMahon — but not Anthony Volpe. It was Max Schuemann instead as Volpe gets an extended look at second base at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
