Massive police response after San Jose officer shot

A San Jose police officer was shot Tuesday afternoon, triggering a massive law enforcement response and sending the wounded cop to a hospital.

The shooting was reported at 12:31 p.m. Tuesday near Lick Avenue and Goodyear Street, according to police.

The officer was rushed to Valley Medical Center for treatment.

A heavy police presence was also reported near Almaden Avenue and Floyd Street, where San Jose cops and Santa Clara County sheriff’s deputies were spotted with guns drawn.

University police may have also been involved in the response.

Witnesses told NBC they saw an individual down on the ground and raised concerns that a suspect may have barricaded themselves nearby.

Police had not confirmed those reports.

By 8 p.m. Tuesday, authorities had yet to release the officer’s condition or say whether a suspect had been injured or taken into custody.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, a Democrat, planned to visit the wounded officer at the hospital, his office said.

The shooting remained under investigation Tuesday night, with police saying more information would be released when available.
