Shocking reality of California’s sanctuary laws: Cops unable to alert ICE about killer illegal migrants, feds say

California’s sanctuary city laws prevented local Sacramento police from alerting federal immigration officials that a killer illegal migrant was stalking a waitress and should be thrown out of the country.

Shalini Thakur, 38, was brutally executed in Sacramento on Tuesday by Rohit Rohit, 22 — despite her filing a restraining order in May against the crazed DoorDash delivery driver who’d subjected her to a year-long campaign of terror.

Despite Rohit violated the order in July, cops didn’t call ICE, because woke California laws adopted in 2017 prohibit communication with immigration authorities, even in cases where it could help keep communities safer, Los Angeles’s top federal prosecutor Bill Essayli confirmed.

Rohit was caught by Border Patrol sneaking over the Mexican border in August 2023 so was known to the feds.

“By preventing law enforcement from cooperating with the immigration officials in all contexts, it puts the entire community at danger,” Essayli said. “It should not be that they have to actually commit a crime and be sentenced before immigration proceedings can commence.”

Essayli’s office runs a program called “Operation Guardian Angel” that works around the law by targeting repeat immigration offenders who are subsequently picked up by cops for removal.

The operation, which kicked off in May 2025, has generated 769 arrest warrants and seen the transfer of 362 defendants to ICE custody by August.

But it’s limited to Los Angeles and six other counties, and only works in certain cases.

Meanwhile, the state is hit with dozens of instances each week where illegal migrants who have prior convictions or are known to have committed crimes are busted again on new charges.

California Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton said that enough is enough.

California’s are sick of law, he said, and politicians that back it, such as Gov. Gavin Newsom and Hilton’s opponent in the race, democrat Xavier Becerra.

“These Democrat politicians like Becerra are harboring violent criminals whose crimes are hurting Californians,” said Hilton.

A few notable cases include:

• David Antonio Aviles Perez, aka “the witch” a convicted MS-13 murderer from El Salvador who was arrested in Monterey, California for attacking a vagrant with a machete, picked up on another charge, and then released by a judge last month.

• Oscar Eduardo Ortega Anguiano, a Mexican man who was deported twice and convicted of false imprisonment in 2014, and then killed two teens in a drunken car crash in seal beach.
• Daniel Valle, another gang-affiliated Salvadoran who was convicted of a murder in Los Angeles and sentenced to life in prison in the 1990s. He was released last year, subsequently picked up again, and then released again by a judge last month.

• Lauro Alberto Rivas — whose criminal record included arrests and convictions for weapons offenses, grand theft and drunk driving, and who was finally captured again by the feds last month.
