A Charlotte, North Carolina, man accused of shooting a police officer is facing dozens of additional charges, raising fresh questions about how repeat offenders continue to remain on the streets.
Dionte Antonio McCracking, 28, was arrested Wednesday after an hours-long standoff with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s SWAT team. He is accused of shooting a CMPD officer in the shoulder during a struggle on Enderly Road.
According to an affidavit reported by WBTV, McCracking allegedly attempted to shoot the officer in the head before the officer was struck in the shoulder. The officer was hospitalized in stable condition and is expected to fully recover.
McCracking faces charges including attempted first-degree murder, assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of a stolen firearm. A judge denied him bond.

Chief Patterson said the officer did not return fire, and that the alleged shooter fled after the shooting.
On Wednesday, police said they located McCracking in a residence in southwest Charlotte. Police said McCracking allegedly barricaded himself in the home, prompting SWAT to respond.
Around 2:40 p.m., police took McCracking into custody after an hourslong standoff. Patterson said two other people were detained for questioning regarding the shooting.
He was charged with attempted murder on a law enforcement officer and possession of a firearm by felon. Chief Patterson said McCracking had an extensive criminal history including first-degree arson and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
There was heavy police presence at two additional locations in Charlotte on Wednesday one of them was confirmed to be connected to the officer being shot.

The shocking details do not end there.
CMPD later announced that Dionte and his brother, 27-year-old Jatarius McCracking, face a combined 190 charges spanning a crime spree that police tied together beginning July 27.
Dionte accounts for 62 of those charges. Jatarius faces 128. Police described both men as habitual felons and career criminals with more than a decade of history.
Dionte’s new stack includes:
- Attempted murder of a law enforcement officer
- Assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm
- Possession of a firearm by a felon
- Possession of a stolen firearm
- Shooting into an occupied dwelling
- Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill
- Felony conspiracy
- Motor vehicle theft
- Breaking and entering motor vehicles
- Possession of stolen motor vehicles
He was most recently incarcerated in July 2023 on firearm charges and released in June 2024, then placed on probation into 2025, according to North Carolina Department of Adult Correction records reported by local media.
So a convicted felon, previously locked up for guns, was back on the street with a firearm, this time a stolen one, when a Charlotte officer tried to stop him.
