As per usual when Iowa State and Iowa play each other, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy and tight end George Kittle had to bet on it.
This time, Purdy was the one who was dealing with insult to injury, following a Cyclones 16-13 loss to the Hawkeyes on Saturday.
As Purdy went to meet with reporters on Thursday afternoon, Purdy was seen wearing a yellow Iowa hat and a grey long-sleeve shirt.
Purdy was asked about the new wardrobe and told reporters, “Any Hawkeye logo looks ugly to me. It sucks.”
Purdy had just made it back home in time to watch the game following a 16-hour flight home after the 49ers kicked their season off in an eye-opening 27-7 victory against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.

“It was tough at the end,” Purdy said. “Jimmy Rodgers is doing a really good job over there, taking over the program and everything. Obviously, at the end of the day, they couldn’t pull it off, and it sucks.”
Since Purdy joined the 49ers after being selected with the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, the Cyclones have been 3-2 against their bitter rival, including last season, when the roles were reversed, and Iowa State came out on top 16-13.
In 2023, Iowa won the game 20-13. It was the first time Purdy came out on the losing end of the bet with Kittle, and it was one he probably doesn’t want to remember as he was forced to wear an Iowa Hawkeyes headpiece.

“The headgear sucked. Walking in with that, it was rough,” Purdy said. “But honestly, I don’t think this is that bad, compared to what George has done: the overalls and the Cowboy hat walking into a game. Him wearing my helmet.”
“I feel like I’ve come up with the good ideas. Hopefully we get a little bit more spicy as the years come.”
Aside from Purdy having to feel humiliated wearing Iowa Hawkeyes gear to his press conference, Kittle took it to another level by having him pose for a selfie in the 49ers locker room and posting the photo on his Instagram story.
“@brock.purdy13 big Hawkeye fan!” Kittle wrote in the post.
