Bears fans might be able to breathe a sigh of relief.
On NBC’s broadcast of “Sunday Night Football,” Mike Florio provided an update on Caleb Williams, who exited Chicago’s Week 2 loss to the Vikings in the fourth quarter with an injury.
“It looked bad, but I am told that there is optimism that it is not a severe injury,” Florio said. “It could be as slight as a Grade 1, that’s the lowest level of a hamstring injury…I’m told that Caleb is in good spirits to attack the recovery, whatever it may be.”
Florio also noted that Williams suffered a left hamstring injury while at USC, so he is familiar with the recovery.
Williams went down scrambling on first-and-goal and was heard screaming in agony, grabbing his right leg. He was helped off the field before being carted to the locker room, visibly emotional while giving fans a thumbs-up nearing the tunnel.
“I’m actually happy it’s nothing with the knee,” Bears head coach Ben Johnson told reporters postgame. “That was my first inclination, but the hamstring could be pretty damaging as well. We’ll see how bad it is tomorrow, and we’ll go from there.”
CHGO Sports’ Adam Jahns reported that Williams was walking under his own power in the locker room without crutches.
Before the injury, Williams was 15 of 26 for 138 yards with an interception. Tyson Bagent replaced Williams in the fourth quarter and nearly led the Bears to a comeback before being sacked on fourth down in the red zone on the final play of a 9-3 loss.
Bagent will start if Williams has to miss games. He started four games in 2023, posting a 2-2 record.
