Beef, pork and goat meat sold in California part of giant recall impacting 165,000 pounds of product

Thousands of pounds of raw beef, pork and goat meat sold in California and across the country are being recalled after federal officials said the products were produced without required inspection.

North Carolina-based Star Meat Delivery Inc. is recalling about 167,639 pounds of meat nationally labeled with a false USDA inspection mark, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The affected products were produced before Sept. 22 and include ground pork, chorizo, pork chops, pork ribs and feet, beef ribs and oxtail, goat cuts and other raw meat products, The Sacramento Bee reported.

They vacuum-sealed and packed the meat in cardboard boxes before shipping it to A&D Foods, a Georgia distributor that sent the products to retail and restaurant locations nationwide under its own label.

Federal officials said products from Star Meat Delivery bearing the establishment number “EST. 1363” should be considered mislabeled and unsafe to eat.

The USDA classified the recall as Class I — its most serious designation.

“Food produced without inspection may contain undeclared allergens, harmful bacteria, or other contaminants that put consumer health and safety at risk.”

Federal officials said the problem was uncovered during FSIS surveillance activities.

No confirmed reports of illness or injury have been linked to the recalled meat.

Consumers are being urged not to eat the affected products and should instead throw them away or return them to where they were purchased. Restaurants and retailers have also been told not to sell or serve them.
