Joe Biden accepted an award at a Planned Parenthood fundraiser in his hometown Thursday night.
The award is named for an abortion activist and friend of Biden’s, whom he credited with helping him make it to the Senate and the White House.
Jill Biden handed him the 2026 Sonia Schorr Sloan Service Award at Planned Parenthood of Delaware’s Chocolate and Champagne Gala.
“This is an incredible honor,” Biden said before crediting her with the trajectory of his political career.
Sonia “Sonny” Schorr Sloan backed him from his New Castle County Council days through the 1972 Senate race.
Biden said she was one of the first people he thought of when the Supreme Court overturned Roe. He said she would have felt “devastated,” then “anger and astonishment.”
“She wasn’t afraid” and would not have spent “a single moment wringing her hands,” Biden said.
“Following the Dobbs decision, as president, I tried to do what I knew Sonny would have done,” Biden said. “We took action. We signed executive orders to protect access to reproductive health care, including emergency medical care.”

Biden closed by warning the room about women’s votes.
“You have no idea how powerful women are in this country. You are about to find out.”
The autopen president also told the gala this is “no time to give up” and that the country is in “dark days,” adding, “There’s nothing, nothing beyond our capacity if we do it together.”

Planned Parenthood notably performed a record number of abortions during Biden’s time in the White House. The organization’s most recent report indicated that 434,450 unborn babies were killed in abortions in 2023 and 2024.
The organization also secured record government funding at that time, bringing in $832 million in the form of government grants, contracts, and Medicaid reimbursements — a $39.8 million increase from the previous report.
