Homeless man makes a camp, complete with shopping cart, atop a bus shelter in upscale LA neighborhood

A secret homeless encampment perched on the top of a bus stop has been discovered in the wealthy Los Angeles neighborhood of Brentwood.

A man could be seen lying on top of the bus stop in one image with some personal belongings and a shopping cart nearby, according to KTLA video.

The regularly frequented bus stop is located near the bustling intersection of S. Barrington Ave. and Wilshire Blvd.

A spokesperson for Councilmember Traci Park told KTLA her office sent a homeless outreach worker to the area to understand what was happening. City workers were also seen at the location.

Metro told KTLA that most bus stops in Los Angeles are owned and maintained by the city and that the agency does not have authority over them.

The sighting comes as the city continues looking for solutions to homelessness with the mayoral election approaching — a competition between Councilmember Nithya Raman and Mayor Karen Bass.

In a recent analysis, the Los Angeles Times found that the city has spent $300 million since 2022 on its signature homelessness program, Inside Safe, with about 40% of people housed through the program later returning to homelessness.

Approximately 187,000 people are currently experiencing homelessness in California, with about 45,000 of them in the city of Los Angeles, according to the city’s latest count.
