Igor Shesterkin has already checked off a lot of boxes in his NHL career, but he reached a new feat on Thursday night.
The Rangers star goaltender scored his first career goal and the first in franchise history with a third-period shot to put the Rangers up 5-1 with 2:34 left in the home opener.
With the Lightning’s net empty, Tampa Bay tried to set up the offense, but the puck caromed off the end boards and right to Shesterkin, who flung the rubber down the ice, three-hopping it into the middle of the net. He was mobbed by his teammates as the Garden went wild.
Unlike last year when the Rangers struggled to score at home, Shesterkin and the Rangers had no issues this time around in the 5-1 rout of the Lightning.
